Church History

Calvary Baptist Church was first called Philadelphia Christian Church in 1889 and later in 1914 became known as Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, and moved to it’s current location.

In the summer of 1942 Rev. Ralph J. Bowles of Winder, conducted a revival in the empty church building, and on Sunday, August 16, 1942 Calvary Baptist Church was organized and Rev. Bowles was called as its first pastor and served until 1944. Rev. P. B. Cash 1944-52, Rev. Paul Freeman 1952-1963, Rev. Bunyan Taylor 1963-65, Rev. Paul Freeman 1965- 68, Rev. Carl Ferguson Jan. 68 April 6, Rev. David Ash 1969-73, and Rev. Ronald Healan was called in On May 30, 1973 to become the seventh Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church and is still serving in that capacity today.

Under Dr. Healan’s ministry, Calvary became an Independent Baptist Church, and grew in body and spirit as we began supporting Missionaries, started a bus ministry, and started a Junior Church.

Our congregation had outgrown our small place down the road and on September 21, 2008 we were fortunate to be able to move into our new Church at our present location.

In August, 2011, Dr. Healan saw a dream fulfilled when he was one of the organizers of the Ralph Sexton Tent Crusade, which ran for three weeks.

Several ministries have been developed under the wonderful leadership of Pastor Healan that has enhanced the spiritual atmosphere of the church. God has given Pastor Healan the vision of this church and a staffing system has been positioned to assist in the fulfillment of it. This includes 3 ministerial staff. David Garlick -Youth Pastor, Rev. Matt Dibler - Minister of Music and Assistant Pastor and Rev. Lindell Hunsley - Assistant Pastor and director of Joy Club.
